History to repeat itself at Notre Dame?

Charlie Weis will announce today that the Irish are hiring two new assistants: former New York Jets defensive backs coach Corwin Brown will be hired as the new defensive coordinator and former Irish QB Ron Powlus will be hired as the new quarterbacks coach.

Lest you forget, Powlus was the mega-ultra-can’t-miss QB from Pennsylvania High School football powerhouse Berwick who signed with the Irish in 1994. Powlus was probably the most heavily-touted and overrated quarterback in the history of High School football. ESPN curmudgeon Beano Cook and his four chins predicted that Powlus would win six Heisman’s; an incredible accomplishment considering the normal college player has only four years of eligibility. Of course Powlus never came close to winning a Heisman and incidentally, Notre Dame’s record bowl losing streak started Powlus’ freshmen season. To be fair Powlus did set 20 school records most of which have been broken by fellow over-hyped QB Brady Quinn. Now Ronny gets the chance to coach incoming freshmen Jimmy Clausen – the most hyped player to play for Notre Dame since… well… Powlus. Drink in the irony; it is indeed thick and nutty with a sweet aftertaste.
