Miami accepts invitation to football Hell

The college purists will disagree with those of us that believe the bowls have become too plentiful, thereby erasing any meaning of the regular season; basically win 6 games and you get to play. No, these games are a reward for a season of hard work – a mini-vacation for all the pain and dedication. All of which is true, unless you are sent to one of the low-end bowls played sometime between Christmas and New Year’s in places no one would dream of visiting in the middle of summer, let alone December. Some place like say, oh… I don’t know: Boise, Idaho. Well Miami is about to find out what it’s like to play in the also-ran department because the ‘Canes have accepted a bid to play in the MPC Computers Bowl on Dec. 31 against Nevada.

Nothing could be more apropos for a team as loveable as the Hurricanes to end up in the football wasteland of Boise. It’s so ironic and twisted that it’s as if Stephen King was part of the bowl selection committee. Today Boise, Idaho is a pleasant 23 degrees while Miami checks in at 79. Welcome to Hell ‘Canes, your stay will be long and painful. The only way this thing could get more surreal is if the Boise welcoming committee is comprised of Oompa Loompas and the visiting locker room looks like a scene from one of the Saw movies.

Oompa Loompa doompety ditches…

Welcome to Boise you poor sons-a-bitches.

Unless you like Potatoes, Lewis & Clark, or miles of wilderness, Idaho isn’t for you. I’ll bet the boys from Miami, Florida will have a grand ole time at the World Potato Exposition in Blackfoot Idaho.

Larry Coker will look nice in front of this baby!

The good thing about this trip is the players can’t possibly get themselves into trouble because there is absolutely nothing to do in Boise – don’t believe me? Let’s let Idaho’s Travel & Vacation Guide say it best…

That's right - absolutely nothing!

I’m just guessing here, but I’ll bet there was some serious soul searching going on when the team was debating this invite. There is no way this was a unanimous decision, but at least Brandon Meriweather is resolute in his decision.

"We pretty much said we were not going to give up," senior safety Brandon Meriweather said. "Everybody in the world expected us to give up. We decided as a unit, as a defense, as a team, not to give up -- not to give America what they want. It's easy being America's most loved, but it's hard being America's most hated."

I pity the poor bastard that has to take over this red-headed stepchild program. What the hell do you say to potential recruits? Yeah, come to Miami – America hates us but we don’t give a damn. Hey, we made it to Idaho last year – next year, with your help, we cold make it to the Motor City bowl.

Go 'Canes!

I hope they get off the plane in camouflage and walk out on the press conference at the team dinner the night before the game like they did in 1986. They are so pathetic.

Is Meriweather under the impression that Miami has _ever_ been "America's most loved" or am I missreading that?

I'd say that they've become that adopted problem-child (no offense to adopted problem children out there) along with their sibling, VT (who is, at least, making an effort to go to the anger management classes) of the ACC.

There was a time when the Miami program was respected - sure, it was a long time ago - pre-JJ - but they were.

There were years, way back when, when PSU was bowl eligible, but Joe wouldn't let them go - because (a) he's a mean old poop, meaner back then than he is now, and (b) they stunk (this was, of course, a different standard of stinking than what we are used to today). There are times when a team just needs to rest and regroup - but then, bowl games mean tv time, nfl scouts and money - and really, isn't that what college football is all about?

I remember several years ago Lou Holtz and Notre Dame refusing to go to some crappy bowl game. I can't remember when or which one. Probably saved themselves an embarrassing loss though.

Meanwhile, Boise State gets to go to a BCS bowl. Oh irony or ironies!

As a proud PSU alum living in Boise, I agree with almost all of your column. However, there is at least ONE thing to do in Boise, I am sure of it. I will let you know when I find it. But I will be rooting for the Wolfpack at the MPC Bowl. Heck, I would root for ANYONE rather than root for Miami!

Steven,

Without a doubt, I will be rooting for Nevada.
