Blue & White Roundtable

DContinuing with our roundtable of PSU bloggers we answer questions from none other than the insane clown posse of The Nittany Line.

There will most likely be two Big Ten teams in the BCS bowls this season. If Michigan beats Ohio State that leaves both OSU and Wisconsin with one loss to the same #1 team, who deserves to go? (HT: anonymous commenter of TNL)

Since Ohio State and Wisconsin don’t play this year, I have no idea how anyone can say one is better than the other especially if Ohio State loses to Michigan by a larger margin. Right now Wisconsin is getting punished for being ranked lower at the beginning of the year. If I was forced to make a choice I would have to say THEosu because they beat another one loss top 25 team in Texas.

With only one game left, who is your MVP of this year’s Nittany Lions? On the other side of the coin, who is your MDP (Most Disappointing Player)?

MVP- Tie: Tony Hunt and Poz. Posluszny had a hard time adjusting to his new position early on but really has dominated the second half of the season and is again one of the finalists for the Butkus. Hunt will finish over 1000 yards, running behind an embarrassment of an offensive line; that’s impressive no matter who you are. The number of tackles he has had to break this season is bordering on the ridiculous.

MDP - Derrick Williams: this was supposed to be a big year for him with some publications ranking him among the best wide receivers in the nation. WRONG!

You have the complete autonomous power to fire one coach on Penn State’s coaching staff (ONLY ONE), who is it and how will it help Penn State? (you may take the high road and say none but I don’t see that happening)

Jay Paterno, not because I dislike him, not because I think he’s a bad coach – I have no idea what kind of coach he is – no, I want him fired so the yippy Penn State fans can SHUT UP about him already. If their ever was a tired argument it’s the Jay Paterno is the reason the offense sucks argument.

Paul Posluszny’s career at Penn State is coming to an end; do you agree with Jack Ham that he’s the best to ever grace the sidelines in Happy Valley? In other words - where does he rank among all the great linebackers at Linebacker U?

I think Paul is right up there with all the greats. I can’t speak for some of the older guys but in my lifetime the top three would be Shane Conlin, Lavar Arrington, and Paul. Without a doubt, Arrington was the most gifted athletically, but he wasn’t the most disciplined. Shane and Paul are very similar in their styles and their abilities but I couldn’t put one over the other. Both were silent leaders on and off the field and both excelled at their positions. I think Paul probably matured a little faster then Shane and Conlin was on some better teams, which helped him.

It has been a strange year in the Big Ten; after Michigan, Ohio State, and Wisconsin it pretty much levels out. Look into your crystal ball; which team in the Big Ten “pack” has the returning talent to distinguish themselves next season?

Don’t laugh, I think Illinois is going to make the next step next season. If Juice can learn to hit the broad side of a barn with his throws, their offense will be nearly unstoppable. Their defense isn’t bad - they are 4th in the Big Ten right behind Penn State. The Fighting Illini are a team on the rise.

Assuming college football is the number one sport in your heart, what sport is second and why? (professional sports allowed)

I’m one of the dwindling few that love College Wrestling – it’s easily my second favorite sport. Wrestling is such a unique sport in that it’s an individual sport and a team sport all at the same time. There are no excuses in Wrestling, it’s you vs. the other guy and there’s no one to blame but yourself. Anyone that had to wrestle in high school gym class will realize that it’s the most physically demanding sport in the world. It’s also one of the oldest sports and can be traced back 15,000 years. In ancient Greece it was the most prominent sports in the Olympic games.

Lightning round (short answers)

The BCS is painful to anyone not making gobs of cash off of it – if we scrap it and go to a playoff system (start holding breath now) how many teams would need to be in the playoff for you to consider it “fair?”

Eight- there would be arguments about who is eight and who is nine but at least the top teams would be in it.

Which college mascot not named after Mount Nittany do you think tops the rest?

I can’t resist; without a doubt - Keggy the Keg

Which team is currently in the BCS picture that doesn’t deserve to be there? (yes, I’m leading the witness)

Notre Dame – wait till they get their asses handed to them in the bowl game.

How many more cookies will it take for Mark Mangino and Charlie Weis to become their own planetary systems? If Kansas and Notre Dame played each other would the collective mass of these two knock the earth off its rotation?

Impossible to know – let’s just hope for the sake of our planet these two teams never have to play. And you thought Global Warming was a problem.

There you have it, let us know your thoughts in the comment section below and stop by Run Up The Score and Black Shoe Diaries for their answers.

So, when you say that Texas is a one loss team - do you mean one loss other than the loss to tosu?

Jeremy Kapinos is the team's MVP.

Thought I'd add some yippy comments about JayPa. Jay Paterno went to my high school - his performance as a playing quarterback can be summed up with his final play - an interception run back for a touchdown - after that, insert clipboard - He made an attempt to go away to learn and develop as a coach, but Joe brought him back. He is perpetuating the system of overcoached quarterbacks at Penn State - every single qb who has taken the field for the last 40 years has been. Quarterbacks need to be intelligent no doubt - but when you can actually see the kid thinking each and every play - you have a problem - and that problem is coaching. Jay has been learning and developing as a coach - and getting him up into the stands was a great move - but this is Penn State - it's not a farm team for coaches.

However, to think that you (or anyone else) could or will anytime soon have the power/ability to ask Jay to tender is resignation is a pipe dream - it's not going to happen.

Coach,
Yeah, you caught me, I shouldn't have said 1-loss team I should have said top 25 team. My mistake.

I agree that no one has the ability to kick Jay out, I just wonder how much it would affect the coaching if someone could.

Regarding the playoffs, there's always going to be one or two unhappy teams. That's just a simple fact. Still, it lets things be settled on the field, which is all anyone ever asks for.

I thought about saying Illinois will be the surprise team next year, but I think they are still a couple years away. But when all these freshmen Zook are playing now become juniors and seniors, watch out!
