Wrestling Wreport

The #11 Penn State Wrestling team finished the season out strong beating #22 Michigan State 27 – 12 and breaking a three match losing streak against #23 Michigan 21-16. Penn State ends the season with a 14-5 record going 5-3 in Big Ten duals. The Lions will be back in East Lansing on March 3-4 as Michigan State hosts the 2007 Big Ten Championships in the Breslin Center. The team hit a couple bumps in the road early on, but rebounded nicely for their final four duals and hopefully has built momentum for the postseason.

Both James Yonushonis and Phil Davis went 2-0 over the weekend and finish their Big Ten dual meet season with perfect 8-0 marks. Davis has now retaken the #1 ranked spot after Maxwell Askren of Missouri was pinned by 10th-ranked Kurt Backes of Iowa State.

Also going 2-0 over the weekend were Aaron Anspach, Jake Strayer, and Bubba Jenkins. Phil Bomberger seems to have retaken the starting position at 184 and almost pulled an upset against #10 Joe Williams of MSU. Bomberger had a 6-5 lead with a little over a minute to wrestle but couldn’t hold on and eventually lost 10-6. Mark McKnight’s slump continues as he lost to #7 Franklin Gomez of MSU by a 7-1 score. Dan Vallimont lost a hard-fought 8-3 decision to #3 Josh Churella of Michigan.

Here are the final regular season records:
125: #10 Mark McKnight (18-6)
133: #11 Jake Strayer (20-4)
141: Bryan Heller (16-9)
149: #16 Dan Vallimont (16-8)
