Blue & White Roundtable

We continue with our Penn State blogger discussion group as Run from Run Up The Score gets his second shot at asking the questions. Leave your suggestions in the comment section below.

1. You're going to hear the argument from now until Saturday, but let's just settle this for the entire nation right now. Who is the #2 team in the country?

I have no idea, how’s that for an answer? The Michigan game wasn’t as close as the score suggested, Ohio State controlled the game. If USC goes undefeated they will have beaten Arkansas, Nebraska, Cal, Oregon, and Notre Dame. Michigan’s “big” victories are Wisconsin and the same Notre Dame. Also, you can make a very big argument for the winner of the SEC because of quality opponents. I just don’t have a clue, that’s why we need a playoff, but I would have to say USC if I must.

2. Meeting a lot of people's expectations, Penn State finished 8-4 this season. However, they looked pretty awful in just about every game. Do you subscribe to the "a win is a win, a loss is a loss" theory when it comes to the 2006 season?

I subscribe the “a win is a win” theory with a caveat: you must show improvement over the season; something Penn State has not. Let’s not kid ourselves the defense is stout, you put this defense with any decent offense and this team has the chance of going undefeated. The offense is horrible and mostly due to offensive line play and they got worse as the season went on. How can Penn State continue to recruit top line talent and turn them into mediocre linemen?

3. Who should be Penn State's starting quarterback next season?

Without a doubt: Morelli. If the offensive line can’t block and the receivers can’t catch, why does it matter? Penn State has invested time and patience with Morelli, now is not the time to start over.

4. We agree that changes should be made to the PSU coaching staff, but do you see any staff shakeup on the horizon?

Absolutely not. Joe has total autonomy when it comes to his job and coaching staff and he’s not going anywhere any time soon. Get it out of your head, this staff isn’t changing and there’s nothing we can do about it.

5. There is a lot of uncertainty heading into next season. Give us three reasons for hope and three reasons for despair in 2007.

Despair first: 1) OFFENSIVE LINE – actually that could be all three but I’ll just use them as one. These guys are horrible and unless they get a visit from the blocking fairy in the offseason, Penn State is in deep trouble. 2) Loss of leadership on defense. Pos is gone and with him a boat load of leadership – someone will have to step up next season. 3) Same goofy play calling will be back with obvious reverses and conservative offensive schemes.

Hope springs eternal: 1) Defense should be really good again. Gone is Pos but back are two terrific linebackers and a lot of talent waiting in the wings. Secondary is back and the defensive line should be bigger if not better 2) I hate to say it but all the skill position guys will be back with the exception of Tony Hunt and he gets replace by a capable runner in Austin Scott. There is a lot of potential there but the same was said about this season – how did that turn out? 3) Penn State has finally found a tight end! Oh glory day, Penn State has finally found someone to catch the ball over the middle and create matchup problems. Quarless has been the best receiving option for Morelli the past three games and will make a great target for next season.

Lightning Round:Who does PSU play in the Outback Bowl?

Auburn, and gets thumped.

What underrated senior will PSU miss the most next year?

Donnie Johnson – he was a good run supporter and was tough when he needed to be, he will be missed.

Stony Brook?!?

Who the hell is Stony Brook anyway? What a terrible way to start the season.

Will Steve Spurrier take over at Alabama, Miami, or stay at South Carolina?

Miami is already out so I will guess that he will stay at South Carolina; at least for one more season.

Happy Thanksgiving!
