Penn State: Still the Rodney Dangerfield of the Big Ten

While doing my daily rounds, I came across Tom Dienhart’s latest for SportingNews.com. Now I’m not one of those knee jerk PSU fans that feels slighted by every negative thing said or written about Penn State football, but this is getting a bit ridiculous. In Mr. Deinhart’s Big Ten trinket award list he writes the following:

They'll be better than advertised: Michigan State
They'll be worse than advertised: Penn State
They'll be as good as advertised: Ohio State
They'll be as bad as advertised: Indiana
Walking the bowl tightrope: Minnesota

Worse then advertised? Worse?! Whose doing the advertising? How can Penn State be worse? Most publications don’t even have PSU ranked in the top 25 and this is coming off a #3 finish. I just don’t understand this line of thinking. He really sticks his neck out on some of the others here to: Indiana bad as advertised? Wow, didn’t see that coming. The only one I agree with is Michigan State, I think they will have a banner year in the Big Ten (more on that later). By suggesting that Ohio State is as good as advertised is suggesting they will win the national title, because most publications have them ranked that high.

What's a guy gotta do to get a little respect around here?

No respect, I tell ya. When Penn State went to the beach, it's parents paid the lifeguard $20 not to watch it. No respect.

I feel like this just like last season nobody expected penn state to do very well but they surprised everyone. If not for a last second touchdown who knows. I like it when penn state doesnt have a bulleye on their backs week in and week out.

Maybe it's because PSU plays such a strong schedule this year. They play the preseason #1 & #2 on the road (OSU/ND) this year. If they win those two, I think they'll get some respect. (Are there any preseason strength-of-schedule ratings out yet?)

Defense will be fine, as linebackers will get all the tackles. Offense needs to have a lot of quick pass patterns to keep opponents from blitzing all the time. They don't want to give Morelli the opportunity to sit back and pick them apart.

anon,

Agreed, PSU plays good as the underdog. How would you like to be Ohio State this year? 9 new starters on defense and carrying the #1 ranking INTO Texas week 2. Very tough.

Here's what most people don't know about Penn State...starting QB Anthony Morelli may be the best pure passer in Penn State history. Their running game returns their top two tailbacks Tony Hunt and Adam Scott. They did lose most of their offensive and defensive lines but have arguably the best linebacking group in the NCAA. Penn State always has enough depth at O line. They are capable of beating Notre Dame or Ohio State or both. They could surprise alot of people this year.

..and will continue to be so as long as PSU shows up (didn't really play)for such events like the Notre Dame game. I don't think I have ever seen such a cluelss bunch of coaches try the same old same old as much as I saw on this past Saturday. Brilliant Gents! Bring back Ganter (NOT the placeholder for Gawd's sake!)on offense and Sandusky on D! Please!
Joe, you seem to be locked in some sort of stubborn old man routine. Charlie Weis took you to the woodshed as a result of it. While stubbornly guarding agaisnt the big play Quinn sliced and diced underneath. You never corrected! While Weis controlled his team, you walk up and down the sidelines offering what? Now don't go and lose to Youngstown State!
